“Each participant will receive an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be forever memorialized in running lore history.” Robin Gohsman (visionary and creator of Team Jenny)
This October, 2011, I will be running as a team member to honor Jenny Crain at the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon. And I need to mention one small detail, this team will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the “most people linked together to complete a marathon.” (The current record is 34).We are keeping the number of runners on the team highly confidential because the London Marathon would love to win again this year.My business, Athletic Mind, LLC, has been asked to be part of the coaching team to provide motivational and mental conditioning training to the members!I am thrilled and honored to be a part of this epic event.
This marathon will challenge each member’s endurance in a completely different way; physically, mentally, emotionally. As we run, we will be reminded that these challenges pale in comparison to that which Jenny and many others with traumatic brain injuries face on a daily basis. In my life, and as a mission of Athletic Mind, embracing and striving for things that bring joy and feelings of purpose are what ignite our personal experience, and this event is one of them.I will be raising money for the Jenny Crain, “Make It Happen” Fund, so if you would like to make a donation, I will be sending out more information in the near future on how you can contribute. To find out more about the LFM/Guinness Book of World Record event, please click on the following link: http://www.jsonline.com/features/health/114843754.html

Embracing Adversity
"Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I’ll show you someone who has overcome adversity.” -Lou Holtz
We all have had challenges, setbacks, and other circumstances come upon us without our consent...whether in training, racing, or life. Experiencing setbacks that are result of fears, injury, personal challenges, anxiety, or failure to meet performance expectations can sabotage confidence levels and negatively influence future accomplishments.
Learning how to handle and embrace adversity can actually make us stronger and empower us to achieve at higher levels than ever before.

True Motivation - Part III
Session Three: Beyond Achievement
May 8th, 7:30 - 9:30pm
It is said that joy is found in the journey and not in the destination; we need to enjoy our pursuit. The process of achieving goals is very dynamic. This process involves reevaluating our goals on a continual basis to allow the maximum amount of motivation to shine through. Essentially, it is not our goals that drive our motivation, we need to bring what motivates us to our goals. Our true motivation comes from small, daily successes and enjoying the evolution of our goals as they unfold. Again, through yoga and discussion, we will look at how your true motivation can assist you in allowing your goal to evolve in a direction that continues to grow and pushes/leads you to levels that you may have not thought were possible.
SESSION 3: Beyond Achievement, May 8th, 7:30 - 9:30pm
Yoga for Runners: Race Focus Strengthen Your Running by Using Yoga & the Mind! Sunday May 19th from 2 - 4pm
Running provides great cardiovascular exercise but the continual contractions and resistance against gravity can result in a loss in range of motion in the lower body. Since the pelvis acts as a bridge between upper lower body, any slight misalignment in the hips can lead to problems in muscles both above and below. These factors may begin to affect your enjoyment of running but are often greatly improved by yoga and related body work.
In this workshop you'll learn how to use your breathing to relax, focus and recruit the appropriate muscle groups for specific movements. We'll then look at some precise, controlled exercises for core and pelvic stability to improve running posture and allow the body to work in a balanced and efficient way. For the lower body you'll learn which postures stretch which muscles in the legs and hips and how to mobilize tight spots safely. Since alignment problems often start with the feet there will also be a special set of foot yoga to stretch and strengthen the often neglected lower leg, feet and ankles.
Trish Washburn, certified yoga instructor, will begin with a yoga warm-up and then set us off for a 2 mile run. After the run portion we will come back to the studio to go through our yoga practice lead by Trish. Yoga is the perfect lead in for practicing the mind to 'muscle strategies' utilized in sport psychology.
Motivational and Performance Consultant, Cheri Cope, M.S., will discuss various mental skill strategies that will help you increase your running enjoyment and performance. She will lead us through a session geared toward mental conditioning and athletic performance. Cheri owns Athletic Mind and has a Masters Degree in Counselor Education as well as a Post-masters Certification in Sport Psychology.
Whether you're dealing with an injury or just want to stretch and explore a holistic practice that might lead to faster, freer running, this workshop is for you. All levels are welcome. Handouts will be provided.
True motivation is positive, joyful, and rewarding. When your goals are in line with what is truly important to you, your motivation will jump-start and naturally propel you toward what you want to achieve.
In this session, we will establish and evaluate our desired goals as well as uncover and discover our true motivation that lies behind them. Yoga along with guided introspection will help us understand and gather insight into the real purpose of our goal. We will strengthen our commitment, determine our mental readiness, and boost our confidence so we allow ourselves to take that first step and continue to follow through toward our final pursuit.
Session Two: Eliminating Distractions
March 14th, 11am - 1pm,
John Randolph Price once analogized, "If you are drowning, don't blame the water but blame yourself for not having learned how to swim." In other words, don't blame the outside when the fault comes from ignoring the inside. We are often thrown off course from achieving our goals by life's distractions. It is up to us to learn how to work through these distractions and make positive choices that allow us to maintain our focus and energy.
The second session is dedicated to achieving and maintaining maximum focus and confidence by learning mental skills techniques that will connect us further to our pursuit. We will be looking at what life distractions and self-imposed limitations/barriers will create obstacles that keep us from moving forward to our final pursuit. Combining yoga practice and mental skills training, we will learn how to strengthen and maintain a positive perspective and overcome any obstacles that may hold us back from achieving our true potential.
All 3 sessions package: $120.00
